Vettes, Vettes, and More Vettes

Jaimey (Laura) here. I meant to post more often than once every several months and I meant to post on this topic a month ago. I apologize for my tardiness. I'm here now so here's today's topic.
CORVETTES
Every year, the majority of my family travels North to see the annual Corvette Crossings Auto Show in Mackinaw City. This year was no exception and I took some pics while I was there. (For details of last year's show, check out my author blog.)
I don't know the specs of these machines so anyone who does, please comment. I just take the pictures. :o)
The "Mongoose." It eats cobras and vipers.
This vette is there every year.
The engine of the purple flamed vette.
This was the raffle prize.

Book Trivia Question 8 - Jane Austen

Sorry for not posting a question last week.

Here is this weeks question:

Emma

Jane Austen

from the book:

Harriet said, "Well, Miss Woodhouse, (with a gentle sigh,) what do you think of her? - Is not she very charming?"

There was little hesitation in Emma's answer. "Oh! yes - very - a very pleasing young woman."*

Questions:

Who was Harriet Smith & Emma discussing?

Where had they just left?

Answers will posted under this question on both sites, on Saturday. Have a wonderful week, enjoy this weeks question.

Forza 2 Platinum Review

Forza 2 is a large racing game consisting of hundreds of cars and loads of famous tracks from around the world. Not only that, the Platinum Edition includes ALL of the downloadable content on a second disc. Now if your interest in cars and racing games is just for a quick arcade type thrill, Forza 2 Platinum does have an arcade mode, but it is fairly simplistic. The meat of the game is in the Career mode which plays like a Car Rpg, in that you can level up your driver, unlocking more races to participate in, and you can level up each and every one of your cars, unlocking more discounts on upgrade parts, of which there are thousands of parts.

Another interesting aspect of Forza 2 Platinum is the paint, and vinyl layer customization options allowing for each car to be a blank canvass for some truly artistic expression. Be it an original design, or a duplication of a real world vehicle, the tools provided by Turn 10 allow for some amazing feats of creativity.

There are some interesting quirks in Forza 2 Platinum, that are worth mentioning. Any vehicles that have automated spoilers/wings for some reason do not seem to function in the game. Also, some of the graphics when setup in the decal editor are not exactly the same when you race the car on the track. The menu system on Forza 2 is a bit on the confusing side at times, as there are a significant number of sub-menus. These quirks do not really detract too much from the game though.

For anyone that likes racing games, but does not do very well with them, Forza 2 has, under the Difficulty Settings, afforded a great deal of control in setting the game to your skill level. Not only can you select the difficulty of the AI drivers, you can turn off and on driving assists like anti-lock brakes, stability management, and traction control, making the more powerful race cars more manageable. The trade-off is that the more assists, and lower the AI difficulty, the lower the bonus cash you will earn, making progression slower. This is actually a nice compromise, thus making the game playable for gamers that are new to racing games, or lacking in the skill to play demanding simulations.

For the races that you just can't stand to run yourself, for whatever reason (long endurance races come to mind), you can hire an AI driver to race for you. Beware though, if you hire a top end driver, they will lay claim to 100% of your winnings, leaving you with only the bonuses. I found that you are actually better off to hire one of the low end drivers that will only take 55% of the winnings, and set the AI difficulty to "easy", thus leaving you with more cash in the long run. Setting the game up this way also makes it handy to have your AI driver earn money for your big ticket purchases, like say changing areas (can cost 2,000,000 credits), and some of the cars are not so cheap to purchase either.

A note here to any parents considering buying this game for their kids, the game itself is rated E for Everyone, so it is kid safe in that regard, there are no tobacco or alcohol advertisements on the race cars, or the courses. But, the disclaimer about online portions not being rated by the ESRB is on there for a reason, as most of the people you (or your kids) will race against are pretty foul mouthed (you can turn off the ability to hear the other racers in the Xbox settings), and there were quite a few naked girls painted on cars for sale in the online auctions. Racing online requires a "Gold" subscription to Xbox Live, but you can still view the online auctions with the "Silver" (free) subscription. Just something for parents to consider before granting unfettered online access to the younger racers.

Book Trivia- Jane Austen

This isn't really a question, I thought I would just throw this in, I hope you have fun with it.

To Miss_____.

Charade

My first displays the wealth and pomp of kings,
Lords of the earth! their luxury and ease.
Another view of man, my second brings,
Behold him there, the monarch of the seas!

But, ah! united, what reverse we have!
Man's boasted power and freedom, all are flown;
Lord of the earth and sea, he bends a slave,
And woman, lovely woman, reigns alone.

Thy ready wit the word will soon supply,
May its approval beam in that soft eye!*

So here is the question: can you explain what this means?

If you have watched Emma you will have heard the first part of this quoted out loud, but I though it would be nice to add the whole thing here for all to see.

Have a wonderful week. The answer will be posted on Sunday, but everyone is free to answer this at anytime.

Hospice Donations Update

Hi Everyone

Well, it's early Tuesday morning and we are 5 days away from the walk. I'm really excited!!! I'm proud to say right now, that we set a goal of $100...and we have EXCEEDED it by OVER $200!!! As of right now, we have raised collectively as a team $333!!! I owe a personal thank you to Cousin Jeff. We made $200 overnight because Jeff took the initiative to post our Hospice info on a forum that he belongs to. That generated a response by an individual who had recently lost his Mom and Hospice took over her case. When we started raising donations this year, I would have never thought that I would be sitting here 5 days before the walk saying to all of you, that we raised this much money. We are not done....the job doesn't end of raising money, until the moment the donations go in. So, I will give you another update Friday night, before I settle in for the evening, on how much we have raised.

I owe a personal thank you to the Lyons Family for ALL of their help this year. Seriously guys, you have been there for me...had my back on this....although none of you have been side by side with me, trying to raise these donations, you've been there on the Internet spreading the word. I cannot thank you enough. But I must tell you, the day that my Grandma told me that she has Alzheimer's, I told her how much we have raised. I heard the shock and excitement in her voice. That right there, was well worth all of it. So thank you from the bottom of my heart...I am indebted to all of you forever.

Sooooo 5 days left.....let's keep going!!!!! Let's see how much we can all turn in as Team Lyons....and know this...even if you are not walking with us, you're still part of the team. You are the one's doing the work behind the scenes...we are just the guys on the "front lines" doing the work...without you, we cannot do what we do. Do you think we can make $340??? How about $350???? Thank you to all of you...I will post another update Friday evening. A MILLION "thank yous" to you all....

Taking A Bit Of A Break

Hi Everyone,

I posted earlier, that I would be taking this evening (Friday) off from trivia, to get some rest and get caught up on daily chores around the house. Due to a family issue that has arisen tonight, I'm going to extend that a bit, and take the rest of the weekend off. My Grandmother, my Mom's Mom, was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer's, and I need to make sure my affairs are in order here in my house, in the event that I need to be away in the future. I don't want to be leaving Jon and the boys to fend for themselves and them having no idea where anything is or where anything goes. Taking the weekend off, will allow me to get a lot done, and still spend time with Jon, so that he can adjust to things as well. I just wanted to let all of you know, because it's been brought to my attention that so many people enjoy playing trivia. Thank you all, and I will be back with you on Monday. Have a GREAT weekend...Heather

Answer: Music Trivia 9

Formed in 1981, the band Queensryche would go on to produce their most successful album in 1990. Empire was their 4th album and would generate their first top 10 single, "Silent Lucidity". This Power Ballad, which contained an instrumental background played by an orchestra, would reach number 1 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks.....but here's the catch...I threw a curve ball in this one. The song lyrics are not that of "Silent Lucidity", they are of the song "Anybody Listening", which also appears on the album Empire.

Jeff got this one...Good Job Cousin Jeff!!!! I knew the minute I put this one out there, you'd get it...(smiling).

Sorry it took so long to get the answer posted everyone. Yesterday was kind of a rough day for me. So after talking with Jeff last night, I'm posting the answer and taking the rest of today off on trivia, to get some much needed rest and cleaning done. I will be back tomorrow, Saturday, to post another trivia question. Thank you all for playing, and I'm hoping tomorrow's question will be a stumper!!! ;o)~

An Introduction

Hi! I'm Jeff's sister Laura but I'm better known online as Jaimey Grant. I am a wife and mother, and author of four published novels. I write about Regency England with occasional forays into other periods as well as fantasy. My books can be found on Amazon in paperback and Kindle form, in e-book form from Barnes and Noble and Kobo.com as well as multi-format e-book from Smashwords.com. I encourage you to check them out.

I have been invited to contribute to this lovely blog and have decided to do so in the form of "This Day in History." It will be random factoids and will include the entire world, not just the USA. (I will admit that my partiality for Regency Britain and Britain in particular may often lead me to post many historical tidbits about that part of the world.) I will be posting on this topic once, maybe twice a month. It will be a random date and links to further reading will be provided. If I ever get something wrong, please feel free to correct me.

I hope you enjoy what I post and comment when you feel the urge. Comments are always welcome!

Formed in 1981, this heavy metal/progressive metal group got it's humble beginning in Bellvue, Washington. The band released several albums prior to the release of it's most successful album in 1990. The release of this, their 4th album, would generate the band's first top 10 single. Hospice of Michigan Walk & Remember Donation Update

Hello Everyone,

I just wanted to give a brief update on where the team is at as far as raising donations. As of this weekend, we have collectively as a team, raised $130!!!!!! We are geeked, stoked, and the push is on to raise $200 now. So, we are $70 short, and it would be awesome to exceed our goal of $100, by raising another $100. Soooo, if everyone can put the news out there to friends and family, that we are short $70 from reaching our next big goal, I'd so appreciate it. Remember, donations can also be made online at our team donation site:

http://www.active.com/donate/walkandremember/HLyons7

We are officially 12 days out from the walk, and I'm as giddy as a little kid on Xmas morning. I live for this walk every year. I cannot describe to you, the emotion and feeling of handing that money in that we've raised, and knowing that this is going to help someone out. I usually don't sleep the night before the walk, because I'm so excited..lol My only regret, is that I wish I had my Mom walking by my side. But I remember, she's in my heart, so she's always with me. I will give you another update next Monday, May 17th, and then a final total of how much we've raised the night before the walk on Friday, May 21st. We are going to work hard to raise this money, we aren't stopping until the donations are turned in. So please, pass the word...we are all in this together, and the team and I cannot take all the credit for the donations...we have to give the credit to you for opening up your hearts to us and giving us these pledges.

Thank you again everyone...look for the next update in a week!!!!!
Heather

Neil Diamond had numerous hits spanning 3 decades, from the 1960's to the 1990's. Originally covered by Elvis Presley, "And The Grass Won't Pay No Mind" was a song written by Neil Diamond, and one that he would later go on to record himself.

Music Trivia 5

Since Today is Mother's Day, I'd like to do a Trivia Question, dedicated to my Mom. This artist is a favorite of both hers and mine...

This artist has numerous hits spanning over 3 decades, from the 1960's to the 1990's. In 1962, he signed his second recording contract, but this time he signed on as a solo performer. His hand prints can be found in front of a ride at Walt Disney World. He's been inducted into several Music Hall of Fame's. As recently as 2009, he tweeted on his Twitter page that he had a new album that was coming out, and that for the first time he would be playing electric guitar on it. He tweeted that he enjoyed to play Gibson and Martin acoustic guitars, but recently was playing a Gibson electric guitar for the new album. Not only has he gained fame as a performer, but he has likewise gained success through his ability to write music as well. Many well known performers, such as Elvis Presley and Mark Lindsay (lead singer of Paul Revere and the Raiders,) UB40, and Deep Purple have covered songs written by this artist. Can you name this artist and this song, that he wrote as well as recorded?

"Saying nothing, lying where the sun is
Baking down upon our sides
My lips touch you, with their soft wet kisses
Your hands in gentle reply...."

My Intro.,, Book Trivia

Hello my name is Gloria Lyons.
I thought I would take Cousin Heather's idea of trivia and do one of a similar nature.

I've been married to Jeffrey Lyons for 17 years. I was originally born in Flint, MI but my whole family moved north in August of 1990 and this is where I live now.

My trivia idea would be about books. I'm not sure how many 'fans' are readers, but I thought it might be a fun thing to try. Most of the books that I have on hand right now are 'Regency Romances'. Some are murder mysteries and I have access to a couple different private libraries, besides the local library.

I've had some friends say that I should do book reviews. Since I mostly just like to read them, I don't think I would get far with doing reviews. Depending on the time I have, I may read more than one book within a day.

If you like reading books, would like to keep track of them, or just meet other people with similar interests, there are several sites that you can use. Personally, I like Goodreads. There is also Bookcrossing and Paper Back Swap for those of us who don't have the space to keep all the books we get. Anyone wishing to pass their books onto others can do so at these websites. There are probably more sites for book readers, but these are the only three that I have looked into so far.

Shall we see how many people like reading and can figure out what book the following trivia is from?

Music Trivia 3

Formed in 1975 by neighborhood friends, in a Jacksonville Florida neighborhood, this group would soar to the top of the Billboards with instant success. They were known for many forms of rock, such as arena rock, boogie rock, and hard rock to name a few. With a Gold Album and numerous Platinum's under their belts, they would open for many well known artists such as Hank Williams Jr., Styx, and Reo Speedwagon. Can you name the band that sang this song in the mid 80's, with the following lyrics:

"There's a child I can see in the back of your eyes, dyin' to be set free...."

Had a little input on this one...Jon helped out..so I can't take all the credit here. Good Luck everyone!!!!

Answer: Music Trivia 1

The year was 1978. Newly hired lead singer Steven Perry, and lead guitarist Neal Schon sat down in a Denver hotel room, and in just one hour, penned out the song "Patiently" for Journey's 4th Album Infinity. It was the first time the two had collaborated on writing a song together, and Perry wanted to do his utmost to impress Schon. It worked, because Infinity soared up the charts, and the band gained more stardom then ever with their first Platinum Album.

Music Trivia 1

I want to take you back 32 years...the year was 1978. This song was released on this particular groups fourth album. It took just 1 hour in a hotel room in Denver, for the groups lead singer and lead guitarist to pen this song...the first song they ever wrote together. Can you name the song, and the group that sang it, from the following lyrics?? I will reveal the answer tomorrow. Good Luck!!!

"Just to reach and try, to live my life, these are my reasons......."

My Introduction

I want to begin by introducing myself. My name is Heather Lynn Lyons. I married into the Lyons family nearly 11 years ago. I am married to Jon Lyons, Jeff's cousin. Jon and I have 2 beautiful boys...Cory Robert Lyons age 13 and Shane Nolan Boge age 12. Like my husband Jon, I have lived in Michigan all my life. I am an only child, and as some of you have seen by my posts to Jeff, I lost my Mom 3 1/2 years ago after her 20 year battle with Multiple Sclerosis. I am a stay-at-home wife/Mom, domestic diva sounds better...lol....as that Jon prefers it that way. I have a Criminal Justice degree and minored in Paralegal Studies in college as well. I graduated at the top of my Criminal Justice class, being only 1 of 3 girls in a whole class of guys...ouch! At the time of my graduation from college, I was married to my ex-husband. I was preparing to enter the State Police Academy, when we found out that we were expecting our son Shane. My ex-husband was raised on a farm, and he too, had had a Mom that stayed at home and took care of him and his 3 younger brothers and 1 younger sister. So, it only seemed right, that I drop my future plans, as he too wished, and be at home to be a farm wife/mother. Our marriage was dissolved not long after Shane was born, and a year later is when Jon Lyons, my soul mate, walked into my life. The rest is history.....

Over the last 11 years, I have met some of the most wonderful people on the Lyons side of the family. It has only been in the last year, that I came to know cousin Jeff, aka my adopted big brother, and his wife Gloria. I have had some of the most wonderful conversations with Jeff, and it is because of that, that I have been led here to write for his blog. Jeff came to me back in January 2010, and asked if I would like to do this. At the time, my husband and I had recently moved into our new house, and life was quite crazy. Wait, who am I kidding, it's still crazy, but I'm learning to multi-task, my multi-tasking. At any rate, I am at a point in my life now, where I can take some time to sit down everyday, and generate a blog. Jeff gave me full reign...but one of the things we have talked very in depth about is music. This past weekend, May 1st, I got involved on Facebook in a trivia competition, quite by accident I might add. And that got me to thinking..."why not do music trivia on Facebook???" So yesterday, I started it, and it blossomed into something I never would have expected it to. While in the middle of an all day music trivia challenge with my best friend, cousin Jeff answered one of my questions that had my best friend stumped. He approached me via email, and asked if I would like to do a music trivia blog on SlippedGear. "How cool would that be I thought.....a daily blog that I do, I'll research, post a lyric everyday, and that will allow people to answer with who the band/artist is and the name of the song. The next day, I will reveal the true answer to who the artist is and the name of the song, before I post yet another lyric." I asked around, felt out what people's thoughts were on the subject, and it sounded fun to some people, so we are a go on it.............

So, I hope everyone who sees this will join in. Let's have some fun...listen to a little music while we are at it. I'm going to confess something to all of you...I am a music geek..biggest music geek EVER. I sing in the car while going down the road, I sing in my house...I don't care how bad I suck, and I don't care who hears me. I find music makes the day go better and tasks get accomplished faster. My son uses the excuse every time I go make him do something, "Mom, I need music to work, I just can't do this job without music. If you want it done right, then you need to let me listen to music." Sounds like a lame excuse, but I go with it, because in all actuality, I feel the same deep down inside too. (winking) I am a HUGE fan of the 80's hairbands. There is just something about that time period in music, and the music that was generated, that just is so incredibly awesome to me. But, I will touch on other genres of music, from various periods in history. We'll do a little country, we'll do a little rock, we will do some pop, we'll cover the 80's, 90's and the present. Many tunes in my library, so I hope everyone will join in.

Thank you all for reading my blog/introduction, and I hope everyone has fun with this, I know I will.

Think you would do the environment a big favor buying a new car? Think again...

There is a lot more to consider than just tailpipe emissions when considering a vehicle purchase. You can save your wallet and the planet a serious hit by keeping your current vehicle, especially after you have it paid off!

In Kentin Waits' article, 7 Ways My Clunker is Smarter than a Hybrid, on the Wise Bread blog he shares some info the manufacturers don't want you to consider when you think about buying that shiny new ride.

2010 Hospice Walk & Remember

I am posting this for my cousin Heather;

I do this walk every year, this will be my 4th year. Been doing this walk ever since my Mom passed away. She had Hospice the last year of her life, and I saw first hand just what these nurses and volunteers do for people near the end of their life. It is completely amazing and incredible. They are the most UNSELFISH people I have ever met. I watched them go through what we all went through, as Mom slowly slipped away from us. When we cried, they held us and cried with us. It touched me so much, that I knew I needed to do something to give back to them. In my efforts to find that "something" I discovered this walk. I also discovered that when Hospice comes into someone's life, it is based on a need, rather than an ability to pay. So many times, these volunteers, nurses..etc aren't getting paid like they need to be. They do this because it is a passion of theirs to be there to assist patients and their families through this difficult time, and to help the passing of a life go as smoothly and painlessly as possible. I know my Mom wasn't in any pain, and for that, I am ETERNALLY greatful. It was probably the first time through her 20 year illness where she wasn't suffering.

I said if anyone was interested in donating, I would so appreciate it. And I also posted that if anyone wanted to understand this better, I'd get them the info. I've gotten a couple of responses to my posting, so I figured I'd post the information now, to better help everyone understand how this works:

I do this walk...it's a 5k walk..nearly 3 miles. I have 3 people I usually walk in memory of: My Mom Karen, my husband Jon's Grandma Speary, and a 15 year old girl named Larain Johnson. This year, I have helpers walking with me. Haylee Williams, who was our neighbor girl at our house in Coral started walking with me last year in memory of her Grandma Sue. Sue passed away from a battle with breast cancer exactly 3 months after my Mom, and 1 day after Jon's Grandma Speary. Not a GREAT year for us all. This year, my step-son Cory is walking in memory of his Great Grandma Speary, and my son Shane and I are walking in memory of my Mom Karen and the 15 year old girl that I knew named Larain. Larain was diagnosed with lung cancer when she was a little over a year old. She lived with it until last May, just before the walk last year, when she passed away at 15. I came into contact with Larain via her Mom, whom my husband worked with. I was asked to make a quilt for Larain (for all of you who don't know, I am a quilter), so she had something to wrap up in when she went out to her Dr.'s visits, as that the disease had left her frail and always cold. So, I did so, and near the end of her life, her Mom had Pediatric Hospice for her. Anyway, I pick these 3 people to walk 3 miles in memory of every year now, and about this time every year, I get the info in the mail so I can sign up. I get a donation sheet, and I generally send it to work with Jon. He's made me over $500 total in the last several years. I make sure to let everyone know, that I understand times are tough. They are for Jon and I as well. My donation goal every year is $100. If I can get 10 people to donate $10 to me, cool, I've met my goal. Many times, Jon gets people who give him a $1 at a time for this. That's awesome too. I've gotten quarters, nickels, and dimes as well. There's no gift too small to me here. When I get cash, I or Jon, write the persons name down on the donation sheet, and then just before the walk I take all the cash and turn it into a money order, and it's made out to Hospice of Michigan. That money order is turned into Hospice the day of the walk, along with the donation sheet with everyone's name, address and phone number on it. Then, from there, I do the work. This is a passion of mine, and I won't miss this walk even if I'm in a wheelchair. My Mom suffered for 20 years of not being able to walk, 3 miles of walking isn't nearly as bad as the pain she endured. And 3 miles is nothing compared to what volunteers and nurses go through to be there for these patients and their families.

The money is then taken after the walk, and distributed around the State Of Michigan to various Hospice Organizations, where the need is greatest. If Hospice of Central Michigan needs most of it, that's where it goes. If Hospice of Southeastern Michigan needs it, it goes there. I know the first year I walked, Hospice of Muskegon County got new cars for their nurses so that they weren't using their own personal vehicles. I feel it is important for everyone to know this because many that I've talked to, think that it goes to our local chapter down here. It doesn't. It goes where it is needed most in the state. And how I look at it is this way: I saw what Hospice did for my family, I keep in mind that I have family all over this state, what if one of them needed Hospice and that chapter was dirt poor??? So I do my part to give back, for the future, and I do it in memory of those that I've loved and lost.

If anyone is interested in donating and sponsoring Shane & I in the walk, we have an online donation page. Donations are done using Verisign Secured...kinda like using PayPal for ebay. Donations will be credited to us at the walk. Our goal is to raise $100. So far, we have nothing. :o( This is the first year, that I haven't raised a dime by this time of the year. So I'm hoping we can meet our goal by the day of the walk...May 22, 2010. Both Shane and I are walking in memory of my Mom, but we are also going to be walking in Memory of Grandma Speary and Larain Johnson as well. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to drop me a line. If not, here's our webpage address for donations:

Thank you.

Save Money Buying Video Games!

If you are a gamer, or have kids that love video games, I have some super money saving tips for you. With most games now pushing $50-$60 new for Xbox 360, Wii, and Playstation 3, it can be a real crunch to buy new games, especially if you (or your kids) would like to buy them every month or two.

If you buy USED video games, you can save a significant amount of money. The key though is patience. If you wait until the games are at least a year old after their release, and used, you will save more than just buying used games shortly after they are released. Some used game resellers only mark used copies down by $5 over new prices, just after the game is released. So waiting a year will give you a bigger discount on your used game purchase, than just buying a newly released used game.

Many times, I have purchased used games for less than the cost of a rental, then later, after I had beaten the game, and determined that I would probably never play it again, sold it for the same or more than I had paid for it, getting it for free or for a profit!

Buying this way isn't without controversy, though, it is perfectly legal. It does completely cut the game developers out of any profits on the game they made. But in the case of some people, who do not have much of any extra income, this is the only way they can afford to buy games legally. So, if you have a favorite developer, that you want to support, you may want to purchase directly from their website, if you can.

Game developers are also working to make used game sales less viable by adding downloadable content that you can only get by purchasing new copies of their games, but you can still get around paying full price in cases like this most of the time. Patience is key here too. Usually, after about a year, if the game was at all popular, it will be re-released as a special priced edition, of some sort, at a significant discount, and many times include the downloadable content for the discounted price!

Now some links for you to buy and sell your used games;
www.Half.com
www.ebay.com
www.Amazon.com
www.GameStop.com

It will take a bit of searching to find the best prices, as used game prices vary wildly, but the money you save will make it well worth it!
