Hospice of Michigan Walk & Remember Donation Update

Hello Everyone,

I just wanted to give a brief update on where the team is at as far as raising donations. As of this weekend, we have collectively as a team, raised $130!!!!!! We are geeked, stoked, and the push is on to raise $200 now. So, we are $70 short, and it would be awesome to exceed our goal of $100, by raising another $100. We are officially 12 days out from the walk, and I'm as giddy as a little kid on Xmas morning. I live for this walk every year. I cannot describe to you, the emotion and feeling of handing that money in that we've raised, and knowing that this is going to help someone out. I usually don't sleep the night before the walk, because I'm so excited..lol My only regret, is that I wish I had my Mom walking by my side. But I remember, she's in my heart, so she's always with me. I will give you another update next Monday, May 17th, and then a final total of how much we've raised the night before the walk on Friday, May 21st. We are going to work hard to raise this money, we aren't stopping until the donations are turned in. So please, pass the word...we are all in this together, and the team and I cannot take all the credit for the donations...we have to give the credit to you for opening up your hearts to us and giving us these pledges.

Hello my name is Gloria Lyons.

I thought I would take Cousin Heather's idea of trivia and do one of a similar nature.

I've been married to Jeffrey Lyons for 17 years. I was originally born in Flint, MI but my whole family moved north in August of 1990 and this is where I live now.

My trivia idea would be about books. I'm not sure how many 'fans' are readers, but I thought it might be a fun thing to try. Most of the books that I have on hand right now are 'Regency Romances'. Some are murder mysteries and I have access to a couple different private libraries, besides the local library.

I've had some friends say that I should do book reviews. Since I mostly just like to read them, I don't think I would get far with doing reviews. Depending on the time I have, I may read more than one book within a day.

If you like reading books, would like to keep track of them, or just meet other people with similar interests, there are several sites that you can use. Personally, I like Goodreads. There is also Bookcrossing and Paper Back Swap for those of us who don't have the space to keep all the books we get. Anyone wishing to pass their books onto others can do so at these websites. There are probably more sites for book readers, but these are the only three that I have looked into so far.

My Introduction

I want to begin by introducing myself. My name is Heather Lynn Lyons. I married into the Lyons family nearly 11 years ago. I am married to Jon Lyons, Jeff's cousin. Jon and I have 2 beautiful boys...Cory Robert Lyons age 13 and Shane Nolan Boge age 12. Like my husband Jon, I have lived in Michigan all my life. I am an only child, and as some of you have seen by my posts to Jeff, I lost my Mom 3 1/2 years ago after her 20 year battle with Multiple Sclerosis. I am a stay-at-home wife/Mom, domestic diva sounds better...lol....as that Jon prefers it that way. I have a Criminal Justice degree and minored in Paralegal Studies in college as well. I graduated at the top of my Criminal Justice class, being only 1 of 3 girls in a whole class of guys...ouch! At the time of my graduation from college, I was married to my ex-husband. I was preparing to enter the State Police Academy, when we found out that we were expecting our son Shane. My ex-husband was raised on a farm, and he too, had had a Mom that stayed at home and took care of him and his 3 younger brothers and 1 younger sister. So, it only seemed right, that I drop my future plans, as he too wished, and be at home to be a farm wife/mother. Our marriage was dissolved not long after Shane was born, and a year later is when Jon Lyons, my soul mate, walked into my life. The rest is history.....

Over the last 11 years, I have met some of the most wonderful people on the Lyons side of the family. It has only been in the last year, that I came to know cousin Jeff, aka my adopted big brother, and his wife Gloria. I have had some of the most wonderful conversations with Jeff, and it is because of that, that I have been led here to write for his blog. Jeff came to me back in January 2010, and asked if I would like to do this. At the time, my husband and I had recently moved into our new house, and life was quite crazy. Wait, who am I kidding, it's still crazy, but I'm learning to multi-task, my multi-tasking. At any rate, I am at a point in my life now, where I can take some time to sit down everyday, and generate a blog. Jeff gave me full reign...but one of the things we have talked very in depth about is music. This past weekend, May 1st, I got involved on Facebook in a trivia competition, quite by accident I might add. And that got me to thinking..."why not do music trivia on Facebook???" So yesterday, I started it, and it blossomed into something I never would have expected it to. While in the middle of an all day music trivia challenge with my best friend, cousin Jeff answered one of my questions that had my best friend stumped. He approached me via email, and asked if I would like to do a music trivia blog on SlippedGear. "How cool would that be I thought.....a daily blog that I do, I'll research, post a lyric everyday, and that will allow people to answer with who the band/artist is and the name of the song. The next day, I will reveal the true answer to who the artist is and the name of the song, before I post yet another lyric." I asked around, felt out what people's thoughts were on the subject, and it sounded fun to some people, so we are a go on it.............

So, I hope everyone who sees this will join in. Let's have some fun...listen to a little music while we are at it. I'm going to confess something to all of you...I am a music geek..biggest music geek EVER. I sing in the car while going down the road, I sing in my house...I don't care how bad I suck, and I don't care who hears me. I find music makes the day go better and tasks get accomplished faster. My son uses the excuse every time I go make him do something, "Mom, I need music to work, I just can't do this job without music. If you want it done right, then you need to let me listen to music." Sounds like a lame excuse, but I go with it, because in all actuality, I feel the same deep down inside too. (winking) I am a HUGE fan of the 80's hairbands. There is just something about that time period in music, and the music that was generated, that just is so incredibly awesome to me. But, I will touch on other genres of music, from various periods in history. We'll do a little country, we'll do a little rock, we will do some pop, we'll cover the 80's, 90's and the present. Many tunes in my library, so I hope everyone will join in.

2010 Hospice Walk & Remember

I am posting this for my cousin Heather;

I do this walk every year, this will be my 4th year. Been doing this walk ever since my Mom passed away. She had Hospice the last year of her life, and I saw first hand just what these nurses and volunteers do for people near the end of their life. It is completely amazing and incredible. They are the most UNSELFISH people I have ever met. I watched them go through what we all went through, as Mom slowly slipped away from us. When we cried, they held us and cried with us. It touched me so much, that I knew I needed to do something to give back to them. In my efforts to find that "something" I discovered this walk. I also discovered that when Hospice comes into someone's life, it is based on a need, rather than an ability to pay. So many times, these volunteers, nurses..etc aren't getting paid like they need to be. They do this because it is a passion of theirs to be there to assist patients and their families through this difficult time, and to help the passing of a life go as smoothly and painlessly as possible. I know my Mom wasn't in any pain, and for that, I am ETERNALLY greatful. It was probably the first time through her 20 year illness where she wasn't suffering.

I said if anyone was interested in donating, I would so appreciate it. And I also posted that if anyone wanted to understand this better, I'd get them the info. I've gotten a couple of responses to my posting, so I figured I'd post the information now, to better help everyone understand how this works:

I do this walk...it's a 5k walk..nearly 3 miles. I have 3 people I usually walk in memory of: My Mom Karen, my husband Jon's Grandma Speary, and a 15 year old girl named Larain Johnson. This year, I have helpers walking with me. Haylee Williams, who was our neighbor girl at our house in Coral started walking with me last year in memory of her Grandma Sue. Sue passed away from a battle with breast cancer exactly 3 months after my Mom, and 1 day after Jon's Grandma Speary. Not a GREAT year for us all. This year, my step-son Cory is walking in memory of his Great Grandma Speary, and my son Shane and I are walking in memory of my Mom Karen and the 15 year old girl that I knew named Larain. Larain was diagnosed with lung cancer when she was a little over a year old. She lived with it until last May, just before the walk last year, when she passed away at 15. I came into contact with Larain via her Mom, whom my husband worked with. I was asked to make a quilt for Larain (for all of you who don't know, I am a quilter), so she had something to wrap up in when she went out to her Dr.'s visits, as that the disease had left her frail and always cold. So, I did so, and near the end of her life, her Mom had Pediatric Hospice for her. Anyway, I pick these 3 people to walk 3 miles in memory of every year now, and about this time every year, I get the info in the mail so I can sign up. I get a donation sheet, and I generally send it to work with Jon. He's made me over $500 total in the last several years. I make sure to let everyone know, that I understand times are tough. They are for Jon and I as well. My donation goal every year is $100. If I can get 10 people to donate $10 to me, cool, I've met my goal. Many times, Jon gets people who give him a $1 at a time for this. That's awesome too. I've gotten quarters, nickels, and dimes as well. There's no gift too small to me here. When I get cash, I or Jon, write the persons name down on the donation sheet, and then just before the walk I take all the cash and turn it into a money order, and it's made out to Hospice of Michigan. That money order is turned into Hospice the day of the walk, along with the donation sheet with everyone's name, address and phone number on it. Then, from there, I do the work. This is a passion of mine, and I won't miss this walk even if I'm in a wheelchair. My Mom suffered for 20 years of not being able to walk, 3 miles of walking isn't nearly as bad as the pain she endured. And 3 miles is nothing compared to what volunteers and nurses go through to be there for these patients and their families.

The money is then taken after the walk, and distributed around the State Of Michigan to various Hospice Organizations, where the need is greatest. If Hospice of Central Michigan needs most of it, that's where it goes. If Hospice of Southeastern Michigan needs it, it goes there. I know the first year I walked, Hospice of Muskegon County got new cars for their nurses so that they weren't using their own personal vehicles. I feel it is important for everyone to know this because many that I've talked to, think that it goes to our local chapter down here. It doesn't. It goes where it is needed most in the state. And how I look at it is this way: I saw what Hospice did for my family, I keep in mind that I have family all over this state, what if one of them needed Hospice and that chapter was dirt poor??? So I do my part to give back, for the future, and I do it in memory of those that I've loved and lost.

Both Shane and I are walking in memory of my Mom, but we are also going to be walking in Memory of Grandma Speary and Larain Johnson as well. Save Money Buying Video Games!

If you are a gamer, or have kids that love video games, I have some super money saving tips for you. With most games now pushing $50-$60 new for Xbox 360, Wii, and Playstation 3, it can be a real crunch to buy new games, especially if you (or your kids) would like to buy them every month or two.

If you buy USED video games, you can save a significant amount of money. The key though is patience. If you wait until the games are at least a year old after their release, and used, you will save more than just buying used games shortly after they are released. Some used game resellers only mark used copies down by $5 over new prices, just after the game is released. So waiting a year will give you a bigger discount on your used game purchase, than just buying a newly released used game.

Many times, I have purchased used games for less than the cost of a rental, then later, after I had beaten the game, and determined that I would probably never play it again, sold it for the same or more than I had paid for it, getting it for free or for a profit!

Buying this way isn't without controversy, though, it is perfectly legal. It does completely cut the game developers out of any profits on the game they made. But in the case of some people, who do not have much of any extra income, this is the only way they can afford to buy games legally. So, if you have a favorite developer, that you want to support, you may want to purchase directly from their website, if you can.

Game developers are also working to make used game sales less viable by adding downloadable content that you can only get by purchasing new copies of their games, but you can still get around paying full price in cases like this most of the time. Patience is key here too. Usually, after about a year, if the game was at all popular, it will be re-released as a special priced edition, of some sort, at a significant discount, and many times include the downloadable content for the discounted price!

New Music Monday....

Music is a big part of the automotive experience because pretty much every car since the 60's has had a radio as standard equipment. So, on Mondays, here on the SlippedGear blog, we will be introducing lesser known musicians with links to their websites, and/or where you can sample/purchase their music.

The first band we will be discussing is a person favorite of mine from Germany, Krypteria www.Krypteria.de.

Lead singer, Ji-In Cho, and the other band members all speak German in most of the interviews I have seen. Most of their songs are in English, but some have a bit of the dead language Latin tossed into the mix. Ji-In Cho switches back and forth from English to Latin with amazing fluidity. Their songs are very upbeat, even the very aggressively worded "Sweet Revenge." Many of the songs have what they call, "trademark Gregorian chants." I am not sure about the "trademark" part, but the choir definitely adds a unique sound to their music.

Krypteria just released a new music collection entitled "My Fatal Kiss" (yes, Ji-In Cho is about to kiss herself on the album cover) which even though it has not been released here in the US yet (Nov. 17, 2009), can be sampled on their website at www.Krypteria.de.
